My personal brand
I would say my brand is dedication to delivery of results and mentoring for growth. As a manager, I strive to help my teams achieve their best in work and life.
Stepping up and putting my people first
My absolute passion is coaching and professional development. I have been in management for over 20 years and have helped numerous people reach their professional goals.
As a manager, one motto I live by is “put your people first, and they will take care of the business.” I always make sure my team members are aware of all the benefits and assistance programs any organization I work for has to offer, and I go out of my way to support their individual needs.
One organization I worked for had a less than desirable health benefits plan and I challenged it, only to be told that’s “Just what they offered.” I refused to let employees suffer without knowing they had options, which at the time was in the marketplace, so I took my own time to let them know. Slowly they de-enrolled from the company plan, forcing the company to overhaul and upgrade their offering. Whenever possible, I will always use my voice and knowledge to help those who cannot speak for or help themselves.
What I’ve learned and who I’ve become
The first thing I would tell my younger self is to finish college under my scholarship. I foolishly left after my sophomore year, thinking entering the workforce was the better choice. I later learned I needed my degree to advance. The second thing I would tell my younger self is to ALWAYS take time to spend with loved ones. Time is a resource you can never get back, and it is the most precious thing in life. Work will always be there, your family will not. I learned this lesson the hard way after losing my mother in 2014; I did not spend the time I should have with her.
My greatest accomplishment is simply being. There are so many points at which I should have failed, so many ways I should have fallen down and not gotten back up—but I am here! My accomplishment is being a 47-year-old Black woman, who is a single parent, has her degree, and is a highly skilled professional, homeowner, creator, and successful businesswoman—in short, I am my mother’s wildest dream.
I’m also committed to continued career growth and learning. I am currently working on my networking skills. For most of my career, I have been a “fixer,” joining organizations for a short time to correct an area or issue, then moving on. I have now been with Discover for the longest tenure in my career, and I want to foster strong relationships to sustain my ongoing presence here.
Being BOLD is flawlessly, professionally, unapologetically being true to yourself.
