I have been at Discover for 4 years (time flies) as an attorney in the Law Department. I am also the chair of the Professional Women Impacting Results (PWIR), an employee resource group at Discover. Also, I’ve been fortunate to be a member of Law’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, as well as a former member of Law’s Pro Bono Committee. I am married to a super awesome guy, Shawn, and have two beautiful kids that make life blissfully chaotic. I also enjoy natural light and copious amounts of coffee and can often be seen at our on-site coffee shop in headquarters. Prior to Discover, I worked at a bank in New York. While I love the textures and chaos of New York City, I did not love living in a small apartment with a baby, a fake wall and inability to buy anything in bulk. We also did not have any family in New York.
As I set my eyes on in-house opportunities in Chicago where I grew-up, Discover was top of mind. I had a very specific list: strong and followed value system, opportunity for career development and advancement, great culture, and work/life balance. Discover checked off all those boxes and the rest is “HERstory”.
Tell us about a great experience you’ve had so far
Discover is unlike any other company I have worked at, in that it encourages such collaboration between the business and law during all phases of an initiative. For example, I helped launch the first Third Party Digital Customer Service Platform in Discover history. There were ups and downs during this launch but I learned the most professionally from this experience and have greater insight and appreciation for my client’s initiatives. Discover also encourages employees to volunteer and give back to the community we serve. With that encouragement in mind, I, along with several other Law colleagues, help create and establish a free help desk for survivors of domestic violence at the Cook County Courthouse in Rolling Meadows, IL.
In addition to the Rolling Meadows help desk, I also chair PWIR. PWIR serves to champion women by creating an empowering environment for members to pursue their ambitions at each stage of their career. We do this by harnessing the power of diversity and awareness to drive business results. We create opportunities for the advancement of women. As PWIR’s chair, I have the ability to help ideate, curate and execute meaningful content and events for our membership to do just that. I am empowered and humbled by the number of women that have thanked me and PWIR’s leadership team for our collective efforts in making Discover a top place to work.
How does this experience compare to other jobs you’ve had in the past?
When I first started at Discover, I was the coverage attorney for customer service and engagement. This was an excellent entrée into the Discover value system as it relates to the customer. I have never worked for a company that puts the customer first. Discover places such pride, emphasis and care behind the end-to-end customer experience journey.
What are some of the benefits of working at Discover?
Interesting and novel legal work. Great colleagues and clients. Encouraged to be creative, which is not typically a lawyerly trait. And, my office is a stone’s throw away from the on-site coffee shop (hence copious amounts of coffee).
