My personal brand

Passion and perspective.

A quote I live by is: “If it’s for you, it’s for you.” If I could speak to my younger self, I’d say to enjoy life’s moments as they come and remember that the essence of living is to relish in the beauty of what’s happening right now. By maintaining this perspective, I’ve learned all things work out in the end.

The power of pivoting

To me, Being BOLD means being confident in who you are and your purpose. It means doing things with purpose and impact.

As a child, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I admired my teachers for the role they played in my educational and personal development. I felt the work they did left lasting impacts on the lives of all of the students they touched, and I wanted to do the same. I went on to teach for seven years in public education, and it was amazing to see my dream turn into reality. My students were successful and I was in awe of the fact that I played a role in their success. The relationships I created with the students, my mentors, and mentees helped me grow professionally and understand my career aspirations beyond the classroom. The work was purposeful and impactful.

After the birth of my son, my focus shifted from my role as an educator to my new role of being a mother. The time I would normally spend investing in the lives of my students was now shared with my baby. While I began rethinking my career aspirations and trajectory, one thing remained the same: I wanted my work to have purpose and impact. I took time to rebrand myself professionally and focus on instructional design roles. This process helped me understand the value in leveraging the versatility of my skills and how they can impact learning in various settings. It also helped me look at my life and career as a narrative that can look different depending on the stage of life I’m in.

My time at Discover has been amazing. I’m beyond grateful for the experiences I’ve had thus far and the support of my amazing manager and team. And, while I’m no longer in the classroom, I’m confident that the work I do and the roles I play in my life all share the same underlying themes: purpose and impact.

Finding balance

Balance doesn’t always look like an equal divide. I’m a mom, a wife, a daughter, a friend, an instructional designer. The list goes on and on. But what does that look like in my life? It looks different month-to month, day-to-day, and, sometimes, moment-to moment.

I pour so much of myself into my career, but, at the end of the day, I close my laptop and channel my energy into being present with my family. While the balancing act can be hard at times, I think it’s important to remember to be kind and patient with myself. And, in times when I find it hard to turn “mom-mode” off, I lean onto my husband for gentle reminders to do things for myself.

As I gain a new title at each stage of life, I am reminded I can’t be everything to everyone at every moment. And I’ve learned it’s okay to be this way. The pie chart may not display the perfect divide, but my life is perfect and beautiful just the way it is.
